About me

Welcome - I am so happy you are here!

My name is Casey Tellez and I am the founder and creator of Roped in Reading. I am a former classroom teacher, now specializing in online tutoring for students needing reading support.

I am an IMSE Certified Orton-Gillingham Instructor, and a Certified Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist from the International Dyslexia Association. I can’t wait to support you and your child!

How I started

My education journey began as a teacher of Multilingual Learners in Honduras and continued in Mexico and Washington, D.C. I have six years of experience working with students in the classroom across elementary and middle school. In 2020, I became increasingly frustrated as I learned about the literacy crisis in our country, and watched each day as this struggle played out with many of my students. I dove into research and became determined to learn more and do better. This led me to evidence-based literacy instruction, Orton-Gillingham and a passion for supporting students with dyslexia. At Roped in Reading, I firmly believe that ALL children can and will learn to read when given the right instruction and support.

Behind the name

Scarboroughs reading rope poster

Scarborough, H.S. (2001). Connecting early language and literacy to later reading (dis)abilities: Evidence, Theory, and Practice. In S. Neuman & D. Dickinson (Eds.), Handbook for research in early literacy (pp. 97 – 110). New York: Guilford Press.

In 2001, Dr. Hollis Scarborough created the Reading Rope using pipe cleaners to show how the different "strands" of reading are connected, yet each is unique.

Learning to read can be challenging for many students, and Scarborough's Rope highlights the complexity of this process.

The Reading Rope is composed of upper and lower strands. When these strands are intertwined, they lead to proficient, accurate, and fluent reading with strong comprehension.

At Roped in Reading, these strands are woven together each session to ensure students become strong and confident readers!

Every lesson is full of engaging and multisensory activities, movement, joy, and of course - evidence-based learning!

It can be a daunting process, and I am honored for the opportunity to be a part of your child's literacy journey. I can't wait to connect!
